Apa Itu Printer Kartu atau ID Card Printer sering juga disebut sebagai Printer Kartu PVC (plastic-card printers), adalah alat pencetak khusus ID Card. ID Card Printer yang bekerja melalui pemanasan ribbon oleh element print head. Terdapat beberapa pabrikan pembuat yaitu Fargo, pronto, Zebra, Datacard, Evolis, Nisca, Hiti, dsb.
Dalam hal ini printer kartu berbeda dengan beberapa printer lain, misalnya, label printer yang memiliki supply feed kontinyu. Dimensi kartu biasanya 85,60 × 53,98 mm, di bawah standar ISO 7816 sebagai ID-1. Format ini juga digunakan dalam EC-card, kartu telepon, SIM Uni Eropa dan kartu asuransi kesehatan. Kartu ini sering dikenal sebagai format kartu perbankan. Printer kartu dikendalikan oleh driver printer yang sesuai dengan bahasa pemrograman tertentu.
Prinsip dasarnya sama dengan printer umumnya hanya menggunakan media plastik. Kartu Plastik melewati thermal printhead bersamaan dengan ribbonnya. Ribbon mempunyai 2 beberapa jenis, satu warna atau monochrome ribbon (seperti black, blues,dsb), YMCKO, YMCK, dsb. Warna dari ribbon di transfer di dalam kartu melalui panas yang dikeluarkan print head. Resolusi standard pencetakan kartu adalah 300 dpi atau 300 dots per inchi, ekuivalen dengan 11.8 dots/mm.
Thermal Transfer/ Transfer Panas
Proses transfer panas umumnya dipakai untuk “menulis” kartu plastik preprinted dalam satu warna atau monochrome. Warna tersebut dipindahkan dari ribbon (monochrome) ke kartu. Printer yang menggunakan panas dari printhead untuk ‘menulis’ di media cetak dinamakan thermal printer yang mempunyai 2 jenis yaitu direct thermal printer dan thermal transfer printer.

The Magicard Prima 4 secures card issuance with a combination of inline and post-printing options. Ultraviolet (UV) images or text, printed inline, can be augmented with overlaminates for added durability and security – including standard and customized holographic options. A logical printer lock is fitted as standard.Using a reverse-transfer printing process, images are first printed onto a thin film then heat transferred onto the card surface. This produces a high resolution glossy image, printed right over the edge of the card. The quality of the finished card is comparable to off-set litho printing, but with the advantage that every card can be different.
